Eventide

This is a series of sketchbook studies that were created during a six week stay on Hainan Island in the South China Sea. I created over one hundred sketchbook studies while I was there that were focused on how the appearance of the sea changes in response to the light and time of day. At the time I was also reading Anne Lamott's book, Dusk, Night, Dawn: On Revival and Courage.

The premise of the book discusses how one might need to adapt to change depending on the season of life they are in. I related the ways one might have to change and adapt throughout their life to how the sea changes color depending on the time of day. As a result of this inspiration, I grouped the paintings into three categories - Dusk, Night, and Dawn.

“I have been following Stephanie's work since she was Artist-In-Residence at the Pfister Hotel. The extraordinary work from her residency caught my attention. The pieces felt like meditations on place and travel. It was like falling into a poem. The seventy works of art Stephanie did during the pandemic felt like a meditation on light, water, and movement. I compare them to my experience of paddleboarding on Lake Superior's South Shore. Paddleboarding is a form of meditation for me and I feel like I'm on the board when I view those seventy pieces. I appreciate how accessible her artwork is. I purchased seven pieces from this collection and sent one to each of my nieces and nephews.”
