About the Series: A Walk With Water

The collection A Walk With Water is a series that Stephanie has continued to work on over the course of 2023. This series responds to the transformative potential realized through encounters with new and familiar spaces near bodies of water. This is Stephanie’s chief source of inspiration given its tremendous power – as a force of nature, a site of cultures, and a life source to its location.

Stephanie often goes for walks as a means to ground herself and as part of her studio practice. Her materials are deeply tied to her concept.  Formally, her work--like water--is fluid, using several processes, including ink washes, stain painting, collage, printmaking, and photography.

She often combines figurative traces of her immediate or recollected surroundings with abstract mark-making—for example in painting over digital collages or transferring them onto different surfaces. This layering of forms speaks to the layered experience of connecting to a place, be it an emotional, mental, or physical connection.

Stephanie says this about this series,

“We can never go back to an exact experience as it once was. These paintings honor the places, times, and daily rituals that have felt like home so that as we move through life’s challenges and changes we don’t lose touch with that sense of connectivity and calm. The act of walking and creating keeps one grounded amidst life's constant changes. Through my work, I hope to share the same sense of relief and calm with the viewer.”
